RAY'S TREATMENT

Ray arrived on January 13, 2007 and was already in GI Stasis due to pellet overfeeding (leading to obesity), stress and lack of hay. He was clearly in distress.

He was treated at the rescue with Critical Care and a few doses of Ovol until he could be seen by a veterinarian.

On January 16, 2007, he was examined by the rescue's veterinarians. Upon X-Ray, it was determined that he was indeed in GI Stasis, without gas or a blockage. He was prescribed a gut motility drug to aid in his recovery, as well as being given subcutaneous fluids to aid in hydration. Treatment also included Critical Care, elimination of pellets and lots of leafy greens. A blood test was also conducted at this time to rule out underlying causes.

On January 22, the results of his blood tests were received. His ALT levels were slightly elevated, prompting the veterinarian to order a fecal float to test for the coccidia parasite.

On January 23, Ray had still produced very little stool and ate minute amounts. He was hunched in the corner of his cage, clearly in pain. A fecal float was performed and the diagnosis of coccidiosis was confirmed. He was prescribed a rabbit-safe analgesic to ease his pain while the motility drug began to work and Apo-Sulfatrim to cure him of the coccidiosis. His Critical Care feedings were continued.

It was over a month before Ray had fully recovered and was producing stool somewhat normally. He was fully cured of coccidiosis and his gut is moving better than ever.

Ray was officially adopted to a loving family in December 2007!
