RUPERT'S STORY

Rupert came to us on January 4, 2007 as a stray. He was found on the side of the road at Bank St. and Leitrim Rd. in Ottawa the evening prior.

He was in extremely poor condition when he arrived. His ears were infested with mites, he was dehydrated, had horrific hock sores on all four paws and could barely move. The worst of it all was that poor Rupert was only 3.96 lbs. (1.8 kg), while his weight should have been around 7 lbs. (3.18 kg). He was starved nearly to death. He was anaemic, resulting in a heart murmur which did eventually resolve when he regained some weight and muscle mass.

Rupert stole everyone's heart who met him during his horrible ordeal. He is a loving, intelligent rabbit despite the odds. He has suffered obvious mistreatment at the hands of human beings and yet, trusts anyone who comes into his new life. His emotional trauma lies in one specific area: an extreme phobia of cages. He was clearly kept in a small cage for a vast majority of his life, barely able to move. His hock sores hint at this, the formation of his bones confirms it.

He now loves cats and dogs and the pleasures of free range life, like playing in the cat tunnel or sleeping the day away on the sofa in between joyful binkies and cuddles with the people he loves.
Although he has come a long way from the rabbit who was thought to have spinal damage until he bucked up to escape the mouth scope, he remains at the rescue with a host of ongoing issues.
